Planning the pillars

Ian came and helped us to plan the pillars. It was very windy but we worked in groups to sketch ideas on the pillars. Ian has taken them away to cut, and then we'll do the finishing touches at school next week. Thanks to Brendan for lugging the blocks around!

Time is ticking...

Wow! Time flies when you're having fun.

This week we are planning the sculpture for the school garden.

It will be in the form of some pillars that will have details on them.

The clock on the right is ticking away and counting down...........

It's all coming together....

We are so excited!

We have nearly finished our "practice blocks", and have gotten used to the oamaru stone. In fact some of us are falling in love with it I think! It's a wonderful stone to work with - quite easy to carve, and we are finding all sorts of interesting markings in the stone, as well as rust spots/lines that make our sculptures more interesting.

The planning for the major school sculpture is nearing completion, and we hope to start carving early next week.

Ian has had some wonderful ideas, that have added to our already wonderful ideas - 2 heads are definately better than 1!

We are very excited................BUT.................things may start getting a bit secretive from now on.............not long until the unveling and we have to keep some things under wraps!

Ian came and talked to our class today about Oamaru stone and the tools we can use to carve it into shape.

We also played with some wooden blocks and tried to put them into the shape we might use for the final sculpture. It was a planning and practicing day.

We all got a small oamaru stone block to practice with, and we set to work. It was hard work, and very dusty, but lots of fun.

We found the limestone was quite easy to carve if you had the right tools. We will keep working with the blocks this week so we can get used to it before we begin the final design.

Ian also brought along some blocks that he had begun to carve so we could see how sculptures take shape. Here is a photo of some carvings that Ian started, based on our ideas so far. Can you tell which one is the mountain, which one is the sea, and which one symbolises Kiwi kids and their bare feet!

Kim met with Ian Longley yesterday. He had some great ideas about making our sculpture.

He will visit us on Tuesday and bring some smaller pieces of stone for us to practice with. We will also finalise our images and decide what we want on our blocks.

Designs

We have been finding out what people think is special about CTS and our community. Then we thought about what shapes and images would match these things and how they might look when carved into our stone. Here is a slideshow of our designs so far....
